The stranger looked deep into Beatrice's eyes, took hold of her onion, and said, "I've seen this onion before".
Beatrice looked up at the stranger (who in fact was produce detective Captain Sargent Major) and instantly fell deeply and permanently in love. The detective took the onion in his hand, turning it slowly to examine it from all sides. “Just as I thought- this onion is the work of a master onion baker. That must mean that you are Beatrice." Beatrice studied her shoes, unable to raise her eyes to meet his. "Yes, I am the daughter of famed onion baker Fletcher Winslow". The captain studied the onion closer then placed it in his pocket handing Beatrice a dollar. Nell's voice interrupted the scene...

She started heading towards it but was suddenly distracted by what she saw behind the mushroomsÉ there lurking silently was her mushroom-gathering nemesis: Beatirix Winslow (the grandmother of our own Beatrice. You see, the Winslows had not always specialized in onions but had once, long ago, been known for their glorious mushroom concoctions.). Nell drew her mushroom cutter and screamed ÒBeatrix! Unhand those chanterelles!Ó But Beatrix, who was faster, had already sprung. She grabbed Nell by her ankle and pulled her down. Nell landed hard on the root of the tree, bumping her head and severely twisting her ankle. Dazed for a moment she paused, then slowly rose. As she did, she saw Beatrix, her body lifeless on top of the mushroom cutter. It was a heavy blow for the WinslowsÐ one from which their family never truly recovered. The lore of Nell-the-killer had grown over the years. The killing was ruled self-defense, but that did nothing to allay the horror Beatrice felt whenever she was in NellÕs presence.
